Devin and Martina

February 3rd 2009: Things got a little wild at Corey Helford Callery for the recent opening of Devin Crane's solo in the loft, Love & Tears (on view thru February 14th.) Just take one look above, that’s a great sight: an amazing piece of artwork with its respective creator Devin Crane alongside Penthouse Pet, Martina Warren. That’s just setting the tone, however, for a stellar opening which attracted the movers and shakers of the new fine art movement. There’s not much more that we love than re-capping the hottest shows coming from our favorite contemporary art galleries, and Corey Helford Gallery can consistently be relied upon to provide the best art, the best parties, and the best attendees in the game.

Although Devin Crane’s Love & Tears exhibit appears to be more light-hearted and playful in message, this DreamWorks animator makes sure to infuse his work with an emotional depth that can be rare to find in such pristine paintings so meticulously rendered it could be easy to assume they have been digitally altered. Make no mistake: Crane’s work is purely acrylic on panel and leaves one with a feeling of both heartache and humor that is obviously deepend by his background in film. ..........Read more

January 12th 2009: Alongside Joey Remmers’ Tracking The Wounded, Corey Helford Callery will present guest artist Devin Crane upstairs in their loft space. Crane will unveil a new series of paintings entitled, Love & Tears.

As a DreamWorks animator, Crane skillfully illustrates the emotional pain of relationships that have gone sour as well as the transformation of finding true love in his beautiful imagery.

The opening reception for Love & Tears will take place on Saturday, January 24 and the show will remain on view until February 14, 2009.

Devin Crane was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in Southern California, the epicenter for all things Disney, Crane was inspired by the film Peter Pan, which sparked his interest in animated caricatures. He went on to attend CalArts in Valencia and worked for Disney Imagineering and Warner Bros. Feature Animation while in school.

Crane concurrently developed successful careers in animation and painting, worker as a lead animator at DreamWorks on numerous films including Kung Fu Panda, Shrek 2 &3 and Iron Giant, and exhibiting in group shows such as Gallery 1988’s “Crazy For Cult” and “I Am 8 Bit” exhibitions. His work was published in the “I Am 8 Bit” anthology, and his paintings have been featured on MTV.com...........Read more

Devin Crane

January 12th 2009: First, I have to say I am an avid aficinado of visual and fine art. One particular artist whom I became an instant fan of was that of Mr. Devin Crane. I stumbled across his site a few months back (www.devincrane.com) and was smitten by his pieces. There's just something about the way he captures his subjects...nevermind that.

For those of you who believe you have never heard of the guy, hearing is only half the battle. You have definitely seen his work on the Silver Screen. Devin Crane is responsible for creating some of the characters in big animation hits, "Kung Fu Panda", the "Shrek" films (my all-time favorites) and "The Iron Giant" to name a few. His resume is quite impressive.

His latest work of art, "Love and Tears" explores the endless quest for love and our fixation with material possessions as an attempted coverup. Through 15 works of art, I hope there is a happy ending.

Devin's work is amazing! But don't take my word for it. Check it out yourself on Saturday, January 24, 2009. ..........Read more

Fox News

January 12th 2009: DreamWorks Animator Devin Crane (http://www.devincrane.com) will debut his latest collection of art at the Corey Helford Callery in Culver City titled "Love and Tears." Bombarded by the daily reports of America's economic decline, Crane's showcase examines America's obsession with excess in relation to the manifested need for love and interpersonal connection. Inspired by Crane's own personal experiences and pain from a series of relationships, "Love and Tears" captures the essence of 15 subjects and their endless quest for true love.

A middle-class native to Los Angeles, California, Crane grew up with the all-too-familiar tale of "wealth and woes." Surrounded by affluent friends consumed by brands and excess, Crane learned at an early age how "un-fabulous" the "fabulous" life truly was for the majority of his peers. Noting their obsession with high-end brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Chanel, Crane became intrigued with the complicated layers beneath the surface of the superficial. These living testimonies served as inspiration in his later years, along with artistic influences from painters such as Rembrandt and John Singer, in creating works that depict the internal private moment in which we all break down.

"I am an art nouveau fanatic," states artist Devin Crane. "This showcase allows me to comb my background in film to create mood and atmosphere in my paintings, pulling the viewers into an experience of emotions. Audiences will find theology, classic themes and symbols woven into the paintings which add an identifiable layer for everyone of every culture." ..........Read more

January 9th 2009: Devin Crane, lead animator on such films as Kung Fu Panda, Shrek 2 and 3, and Iron Giant, has a show of gorgeous new paintings opening tomorrow, January 24, at Corey Helford Gallery In two weeks the very talented Devin Crane will have an opening of his show "Love and Tears" at the Helford Gallery in Culver City. Devin is a development artist at Dreamworks by day, and he's just as busy painting like a madman in his private time as well. He often focuses on the female form (though not exclusively) and many of his portraits are based on people he knows well. He grew up in L.A.(as it seems so few people actually have), with a movie-loving kid's imagination, and all the odd contradictions that this strange place offers an artist. This show will feature some lovely, melancholic, textured imagery. Go see it.

It opens on Saturday, January 24 at 7pm. ..........Read more

The Snow Queen

October 5th 2005: Devin Crane, currently a vis dev artist at DreamWorks Feature Animation, is having a one-man show at Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight (7020 Melrose Ave., corner of Melrose & La Brea). The show is called “Illusion Factory: Fairy Tales from Hollywood” and the idea behind the paintings is to “reinvent traditional fairy tales and classic book titles, while commenting on the superficiality and shallowness of modern day Hollywood.” I’m not familiar with Devin’s work, but if the rest of his paintings are as cool as the “Snow Queen” one they’re using to promote the show, then it should be worth checking out. Opening reception is this Sunday, October 9, from 6-9pm. The show only runs for one week, closing on October 16, so you better drop by quick. More details at Gallery1988.com
